  • 1.  UHaul Insurance Requiring a different LLC

    We have a property that we just signed a contract with UHaul and our insurance carrier, StateFarm, has requested we get a separate LLC for the UHaul portion of our business. We have not encountered this before, has anyone else?

    Nothing against State Farm, but they do not train their agents in commercial insurance. I was an ex-Farmers agent and did things similar due to lack of knowledge. Most of your self-storage programs will exclude the U-Haul business entirely but will not require that you set up a separate LLC.

    We have been a U-Haul dealer for 10 years and with the same insurance agent that same period of time and it is obvious State Farm does not know your business.

    We had U-Haul at two properties over a ten year period and never had a request for a separate LLC. A new insurance provider may be a better solution than setting up a new LLC.

    No need to separate the U-Haul LLC. Our agency writes 3-5 self-storage facilities a month in Texas and surrounding states. Assurance One of Texas is an independent agency, so we will shop all policies on an annual basis to verify best coverage/premiums. Give us a call!

    I wonder if an attorney might see an advantage to separating the businesses for liability reasons or resale reasons.
