  • 1.  Storage unit as "warehouse" for gun manufacturer?

    Posted 10 days ago

I had a guy call me and ask if he could store parts for guns that he builds at his home.  He is low volume, it is a hobby/side-hustle.  He said he needs to get a letter for the ATF that says something to the effect of, "I do not have any issue with allowing _____ to store firearms and firearm parts at my facility."

He said he will only be storing parts that he will come get to put together at his house.  No sales on my site.  No ammunition at all.  He will open the door for me to inspect at any time.

This is a new one for me.  I personally don't care about him storing the parts as long as he isn't conducting business on site, but I'm not sure if there are regulations I am not aware of, or something I'm not thinking about.  Any advice?

It may be a good idea for you to contact ATF to verify if and why they want the letter from you. They should be able to do this and any info you get may help you decide if storing the gun parts is worth doing.

Just an FYI for everyone.  I called ATF, they said:

    1. Dealers really shouldn't have anything stored that isn't their main place of business,
    2. It's pretty common for some less-than-honest dealers to try to do this.

    I just said no.
