If this issue matters to members, they should try to meet with their state reps and senators after the next general election in 2024 but before the next session begins in 2025.
Getting involved in campaigns, whether through putting a campaign sign in your yard, making a campaign contribution, making phone calls or walking your block for a candidate, can also make a big difference. The key will be creating a relationship so that your state representative and state senator know who you are and that you own a small business in their district.
Setting up an in-person, face-to-face meeting with elected officials is another way to potentially make an impact. We can provide talking points.
Members should be sure to let TSSA know if they plan to do any or all of those things.
The primary is March 5, 2024 and the general election is on November 5, 2024.

Ginny,
Is there anything we can do moving forward for next session?

The bill passed in the House but we could never get a hearing in the Senate. In Texas (and all U.S. states except for Nebraska), a bill must pass in both houses AND be signed and not vetoed by the Governor to become a law.
We strongly encourage members to meet with their state reps and senators before the next session begins in 2025. Getting involved in campaigns is also very effective.
As small business owners and voters, members have more influence than they might believe, but only if legislators are educated to understand why the current statute is an unfair waste of funds. The elected legislators need to stand up for small business owners in Texas and not just for the newspapers.

All,
Any updates on the requirement for news paper ads?
There was a vote recently to change that. Anyone has any updates on the results?
