Hi, I'm constructing an 11k sqft 1-story building. The steel building manufacturer is saying that its under 12k sqft so no fire walls needed and that is per the 2018 IBC. The county says we need it every 2500 sqft (so we put in 4 walls) although they also say they work under the 2018 IBC. What is the real ruling here? Do I need them or not? I feel caught in the middle...

    Thanks in advance.

I would have the county building department provide you documentation that they have adopted 2018 IBC.  Then show them what the 2018 IBC says about self storage buildings and fire walls.  You may need an architect who will fight for you on this one.  I've run into building officials who have told me the architect interprets the code and determines how to follow the building code.  It shouldn't cost much for an architect to provide you with a life safety plan.
